Tampa is the heart of the Gulf Coast, and with more than 200 species of fish, it’s a well sought after fishing destination for anglers all over the country. The city and its many waterways have a lot to offer, and in this Tampa Bay fishing guide, we’re going to explore this beautiful piece of the Sunshine State.
How to Fish Tampa Bay
There are a few different strategies you can take when fishing in Tampa Bay. If it’s your first time in this area, you’ll want to read through this section and consider hiring a Tampa Bay fishing guide or Charter to help you navigate the waters. This will help you get started!
Fish The Shore
If you’re here and looking for something to do, fishing from the shore is a great way to pass some time. You never know what you’ll catch, and Tampa Bay has plenty of piers, bridges, and beaches loaded with great fishing opportunities.
The top spot for shore fishing in Tampa Bay would have to be the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. This amazing bridge offers awesome views, and it separates the Gulf from the bay. Here you can catch anything from King Mackerel to Snook.
If surf fishing is your game, you’ll want to check out Clearwater Beach. There’s plenty of room to spread out and fish the surf, and you can catch almost anything, including Pompano, Redfish, and Trout.
Fish Tampa Bay with a Charter
Having a knowledgeable Tampa Bay fishing guide with you is invaluable. This is the most effective, enjoyable, and convenient way to fish in Tampa. If you’re looking to make the most out of your time on the water, enjoy yourself, and create an enjoyable experience for people who might not be as into fishing as you are, this is the way to go.
There are a variety of different fishing trips you can take with a charter, so you’ll want to shop around and get the right one based on what type of experience you want. There are half-day trips, full-day trips, night fishing, and even bow fishing adventures. Keep in mind that you can also choose charters based on fishing locations.
Tampa Bay is loaded with inshore, offshore, and freshwater fishing opportunities, so if you have a specific fish or type of experience in mind, hiring a fishing charter to take you on the water will help you get exactly what you’re looking for.
Best of all, you get to learn from experienced captains who have been doing this for a long time. They’ll help you hone your fishing capabilities, so you can catch something you probably haven’t seen before. It’s the ultimate way to create a unique experience that you won’t forget.
Take a Kayak
Kayak fishing in Tampa Bay is probably one of the most popular ways to go about it, and for a good reason. There’s plenty of grassy flats, backwater canals, and miles of shoreline to access the water from, so there’s a lot to love about Tampa as a kayaker.
This strategy is what will help you find some seriously huge fish because you can squeeze into places where a lot of people can’t get. That said, you’ll want to make sure you know where you’re going and what you’re in for. It’s suggested that you have a fish finder with you or at least a depth indicator.
By kayak, you’ll find a lot of popular inshore fish such as Snook, Redfish, and Speckled Trout. The best part about this is that you can pretty much drop your kayak from anywhere and start working your way towards the catch.
What Can You Catch?
We talked about it a little, and if you’ve ever fished in Tampa Bay, you know there are plenty of great species, but what can you expect to catch here? Tampa provides a large variety of fish, but most people venture here for Tarpon, Snook, and Redfish.
Tarpon
While Boca Grande is known as the Tarpon capital, Tampa Bay is starting to prove itself worthy of the title. The season runs from April to August but can come early and run late on a good year. Most people come during the summer months because this is when the Tarpon population is most active.
Their peak migration is from May to July, and you can expect to find Tarpon as big as 140 pounds during this time. We don’t suggest going out on the water attempting to catch these behemoths without the right gear and team by your side. The typical fight with a Tarpon can last as long as 40 minutes, so you’ll want to book a Tarpon charter just to be safe!
Snook
Snook are available in Tampa Bay throughout the entire year, but your best bet is to try and find them at night. These nocturnal fish hang out around docks and mangrove shorelines, so kayak fishing for them is a real possibility.
If you have your sights set on backwater canal fishing, these are the fish you’ll want to target. Topwater plugs, shrimp, and sardines are the best ways to attract attention from these guys.
Redfish
Florida Redfish are unlike any other, and in this Tampa Bay fishing guide, they’re the king of the flats. They’ll chase down your plugs in the shallow flats during the warmer months of the year. Most of them will hibernate during the winter, and they’ll migrate to deeper waters during this time.

Captain Scott had the pleasure of fishing with a wonderful family this month. Amauri, his brother Marcos, his son Marcos and his son Marco along with two young ladies came out to explore what offshore fishing had to offer. They were traveling from Brazil to spend some time at this beautiful destination. While here, they had to get out in the deep blue sea.
They adventured out on a two day fishing charter out of Tampa Beach. The weather conditions were great on both days. Sea conditions were not as great on the first day creating an opportunity to fish closer to shore. While fishing there, they caught several species of fish. The main catch was migrating and spawning Redfish. Most of the catches of redfish weighed in at 20-50 pounds.
Sea conditions laid down and allowed them to go offshore the second day. Bottom fishing was what they wanted to do while offshore fishing. Captain Scott took them 25 miles offshore to one of his productive bottom fishing spots. After several drops, they started hooking into big red snapper. Cut bait was the magic on this fishing trip.
This awesome group got to experience many different catches. They had a grouper on as well but you have to know how to fish for them. When grouper get hooked into, they want to run and dig into the rocks. Once this happens, you are most likely going to lose the fish.
Some additional species caught were sea bass. Sea bass can be caught on the bottom as well. Interesting enough, the reef they were fishing also was holding barracuda. This group really enjoyed landing a 5 foot barracuda.
Captain Scott really enjoyed fishing with these clients. It is always nice to be able to share something you love with travelers and visitors. Captain Scott holds Tampa Beach close to his heart and would love to show you what is so magical about this destination. He looks forward to seeing you on the water next time.

October was a very strong month for catching redfish here in West Florida. As the months roll on, the fishing will continue to be strong. You may have to be more patient as the temperatures drop but you will still have a great chance at catching some big fish. Sometimes being out on the water isn’t about catching big fish. Florida Fishing is more about being outdoors while the weather is cooler. Setting the hook is an added bonus as well as a trophy class fish. Many people lose touch with the activity of fishing rather than catching. Enjoy the process of catching a fish and it will make that catch even better.
Luckily, when you are traveling to Tampa during these fall months you have a great chance at catching some quality fish and numbers of different species. Our local expert had the pleasure of fishing with Ray, his wife Peggy and their grandson Raymond. After conversing for multiple months about when the best time to come fishing, the decided October was going to be the best time. Just to get out on the boat and on the water made all that time worth it.
Redfish fishing can get slow at times, hence the reason why you have to stay patient. The Tampa waters hold resident redfish so you can also find several nice ones. Ray and his family caught a nice redfish right off the bat. It was a 31 inch redfish that put some smiles on the faces of Ray and his family. Ray was here to help his wife Peggy catch the fish of her dreams, a big bull redfish over 40 inches. After some time of not finding this fish where they caught the first one, the Captain made some changes.
One of the downfalls of fishing in Florida is that you can experience some boat traffic. Boat traffic will prevent you from getting in your fishing spots. Also, the amount of vibration the boats give off while slow the bite down and keep the fish away. When you are Florida Inshore Fishing, you have to make sure that you choose the right times and tides to go fishing. Find quiet times when the tides are moving right and get out on the water.
Due to slower action, our Captain made a decision to head further south in the Bay looking for better waters. It was not long after getting there that they got in on some action. Drifting is the best technique to cover water and catch redfish. You have to drift with live bait in order to have the best success in catching some quality fish. Whether you want to use crabs, pin fish, threadfins, mullet or shrimp is completely your preference. They are all effective especially this time of year.
As a result of moving, they were rewarded with the fish they were looking for. 8-year-old Raymond was up to bat as the rod starting going off. Watching the bait being eaten is one of the most exciting parts of catching big redfish. Raymond was hooked up on a nice redfish and was fighting it all by himself. Just to watch this little man fight this fish was an absolute blast. Every time the redfish would make a hard run and take drag his face would light up. Raymond was sitting on a cooler as he was fighting and as the fish pulled he would get lifted slightly making for an even better experience. It was a true fight that made the trip truly special.
The Captain admits that this was one of the most unique battles that he had the chance to experience. Certainly, it is moments like this that make being a fishing captain one of the best jobs ever. Just to provide a family with this much joy makes all the hard work so much sweeter.
Our local expert was truly honored to be part of this incredible outdoor experience. Ray will be back for more and in search for his trophy redfish. You just never know when the bite will come!

Trout Fishing has been on fire. If you want to load up the boat quickly with some keepers, you can get it done. Make sure you pay attention to FWC rules and regulations before harvesting. Ed and his children were out there for 2 hours before they caught a limit along with several other fish. In total, they caught over 20 fish. The Captain had the pleasure of fishing with his brother Jeff. Some days you have to adventure out with family and put them on the fish of their dreams. One of the most rewarding parts about this fishing trip is that Jeff brought along his 4-year-old son, Mason. The original fishing plans were to go offshore but conditions were unpredictable. When this occurs the best bet was to go Tampa Beach inshore fishing in the hunt for a Red Fish.
One of the lost arts about being in the outdoors and more specifically fishing is patience. Firstly, when you go fishing, you can’t always expect to catch fish. You are not obligated to a fish but putting yourself in the best position to do so. The people that stay patient are usually the ones that are rewarded.
Captain Brad has a repertoire of different locations that produce fish during these next couple of months. Sometimes you have to travel to multiple locations in order to locate where the redfish are moving to. Throughout these next couple of months, live bait will be the most effective method to catching redfish. We would advise using crabs or pinfish in order to target these bigger fish.
Just shortly after casting out our bait, Jeff was hooked up. You could tell that this fish was big as the drag peeled off the reel and the rod was bent. It took several hard runs making for a fight of a lifetime. The first fish Jeff landed was a 47 inch Bull Redfish. It was not long after this fish that Jeff has hooked up again, bringing another trophy Florida redfish to the boat. Jeff caught his second trophy measuring in at 46 inches. You may think this is unheard of but this area in Northeast Florida is known to produce some of the best redfish fishing in the world.
The best part about Trophy Florida Redfish Fishing was the ability to see and share these special moments with clients or family. Just watching the expressions of Mason as his dad reeled in this monster fish was worth the trip. Mason even laid down next to the fish. The redfish was almost the size of Mason and it was absolutely incredible to be able to show him the potential of our fisheries here in Florida.

July was an amazing month for offshore fishing in Tampa, FL. Taking a quick cruise out into the Gulf of Mexico or the local reefs and wrecks produced a steady bite for its visitors. July was also the month that Red Snapper Season opened up for several weekends. A Snapper Fishing Charter was one of the best experiences here along the west coast!
Just out of Tampa Bay, you will find the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico. While cruising through Tampa Bay to get there, enjoy the sights and wonders of West Florida. The views of the city of Tampa is beautiful and makes for a true outdoor experience. Enjoy the ride as you make your way to Snapper Fishing grounds!
Our local experts have years of experience cruising these waters and getting out to the local reefs for an abundance of species. Some of our experts have learned a variety of techniques including inshore fishing and offshore fishing. When the weather gets rough, you can always come in and catch some great species on lighter tackle.
Our experts had the pleasure of fishing with Ariel and Tai. They were traveling from California and Japan to do business at a convention. It was a fun morning with the owners of Jackall Lures this summer. The fish were all fired up and ready to be caught. Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico gives access to some of the best waters to catch Red Snapper and Mangrove Snapper. Sometimes when you go out you come across other species that can change the plans or direction of your fishing adventure.
Ariel and Tai wanted to catch mangrove and red snapper. They got the mangrove snapper all fired up on the local reef and started reeling them in. It was awesome to have a school of great fish below the boat. Sometimes when you fire up a school and you put out bait and get the water chummed up, you happen to acquire some unwanted guests. Tai was looking for a good fight and he sure got one.
As they were reeling in a mangrove or grey snapper left and right, they wanted to go for something bigger. Chunking out a bigger bait and letting it get to the bottom, it was not long until something picked it up. Tai was in for a long 20-minute fight that he actually had to have Arial assist him with. The taxmen were in town and they brought one to the boat. They caught a 7 foot, roughly 200-pound reef shark. It was an awesome fight. You just never know what you will catch on a Tampa Fishing Charter. When you bottom fish like such, you will always encounter sharks whether you are catching them or they steal the struggling fish you just hooked.
After getting taxed as they call it, the bite slowed down. After some time, the red snapper moved in. Ariel and Tai had a lot of fun catching several of them before the bite shut off. It was not long after the bite shut down that we decided to move inshore in order to catch a Red Fish. Unfortunately, this trip was on the weekend and the redfish were lock jawed.
Captain Brad had an awesome time with Ariel and Tai. They are looking forward to getting back on the water next time they visit Florida. You truly can’t beat what this beautiful area of Florida can offer you. Don’t miss out on your adventure in search for the inshore or offshore species of your dreams. Tampa Beach can most certainly accomplish your goals and dreams right here in Florida. We can’t wait to see you on the water next time!

Matt, Josh, and Jennifer adventured out on a quick 4-hour fishing trip. In a short time after leaving the boat ramp, they caught 20 Sea Trout. Throw some topwater baits at them while they are in schools and hold on for some fun action.
